How to Choose Cricket Batting Pads

Compare traditional cane, lightweight and slim-fit batting pads, then check size, knee position, straps and mobility.

Quick answer

Get the length right first, then choose the construction style. Traditional cane pads feel classic and substantial, lightweight pads reduce bulk, and slim-fit pads suit players wanting a closer fit.

Start with size

Measure from the centre of the kneecap to the instep. If the knee roll does not sit over the knee, the pad is the wrong size regardless of how premium it is.

See the full CricketWise pad size guide.

Traditional cane

Traditional pads use the familiar cane-style vertical structure and generally offer a classic, substantial feel.

Lightweight

Lightweight pads aim to reduce bulk and can suit players who value quick movement and running between wickets.

Slim fit

Slim-fit designs sit closer to the leg and can be useful for narrower builds or players who dislike excess material around the shin.

Fit checklist

  • knee roll centred over the knee
  • lower section covers the top of the shoe appropriately
  • pad does not rotate around the leg
  • straps are secure without cutting in
  • player can run, crouch and take a batting stance comfortably

Fit rule

Try to judge pads in a batting stance rather than standing upright only. The right pair should stay centred while you move, run and bend.
