How to Buy Your First Cricket Kit Without Wasting Money
A practical order for buying a first cricket kit, from checking club-supplied gear to choosing the bat, protection, footwear and bag.

Do not start by buying a complete kit. First check what the club supplies, then get the correct bat size and required personal protection. Add pads, helmet, footwear and bag only where they are actually needed.
Step 1: ask what the club supplies
Many junior teams share helmets, pads or other equipment. Buying duplicates is one of the easiest ways to overspend.
Step 2: get the bat size right
Use height rather than age as the starting point. A bat that is too large can make technique harder even if the player will eventually grow into it.
Step 3: buy personal protection
Gloves and an abdominal guard are personal items. A helmet may also need to be personally fitted depending on the club and competition.
Step 4: add pads and shoes
If pads are not supplied, measure knee to instep. Choose footwear for the actual playing surface rather than assuming spikes are required.
Step 5: choose the bag last
Once you know how much gear the player actually carries, choose a bag that fits it. Young beginners rarely need the largest wheel bag available.
