Quick answer

NZC's 2025–26 policy makes a faceguard helmet mandatory for Under-19 hardball players when batting, keeping close to the stumps and fielding close in specified positions. The helmet must meet BS7928:2013.

When Under-19 players must wear a helmet

NZ Cricket’s community policy says junior and youth hardball players must wear a helmet with faceguard during matches and practice when:

  • batting
  • wicket-keeping within 5 metres of the stumps
  • fielding within 7 metres of the stumps in the covered close-fielding positions

The policy applies to Under-19 players even when they are playing senior cricket.

Required standard

NZC requires British Standard BS7928:2013 helmets for junior and youth hardball cricket.

The ICC’s current helmet guidance additionally identifies the updated standard BS 7928:2013 + A1:2019, which includes neck-protector specifications.

Neck protectors

NZC recommends a neck protector when batting against fast or medium-paced bowling.

Fit still matters

Certification is not a substitute for correct fit. Measure head circumference, choose the correct size, and ensure the helmet and faceguard sit in the position specified by the manufacturer.
